TOWN SCULPTOR OF AMSTERDAM Hildo Krop started out as a confectioner in the Dutch provincial town of Steenwijk. In 1906, however, he took the decision to leave his métier and embark on an artistic career. After training and apprenticeship, his career got off to a flying start in 1913 thanks to a prestigious assignment at The Shipping House on the Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam.

Hildo Krop in z'n atelier in 1927 Hildo Krop (1947). Krop werd in 1959 gelauwerd met de Prijs van de Stichting Kunstenaarsverzet 1942-1945. Hij overleed in 1970, op 86-jarige leeftijd,. Hildo Krop (Steenwijk, 1884 - Amsterdam, 1970) is best known as the city sculptor of Amsterdam, an honorary title granted to him in 1956 after forty years of working for the Dienst Publieke Werken (Public Works Department). Krop's sculptures can be discovered on many facades and bridges in Amsterdam. He also contributed beautiful facade-sculptures to the Scheepvaarthuis.
